I've been thinking a lot about racism, the politics of it all and American history. I had to kick this idea around for a minute before getting the idea clear enough to write about, but this is still a first draft (I don't really have time to do endless editing now). I guess what really bugs me the most about this whole mishigas is that the people I hear howling the loudest and the most frequent really are only FOBs (Fresh Off the Boats) themselves. I mean, from an historical perspective, every new wave of illegal European immigrants have been denigrated by the more established (read: last wave of illegal immigrants who had at least one generation of anchor babies to hold them here), previous illegal European immigrants. Why do you think we have so many jokes about the Irish or the Italians or the Scandinavians or the Polish or the ___ (fill in your White people of choice)?
The following is more of a question-session than a question-and-answer session as I really do not have the answers. My family's history is half been-here-since-the beginning and half we-are-truly-a-hodgepodge-of-European-African-genes (with part of the family tracing back to the early 1600s, and some just moving here from the beginning of the 1900s), and I've seen how each successive generation has learned how to be "American" while still maintaining some connection to the customs and traditions from whence they came. Well, that last bit is more on the European side of things. From the Native side, well, that's a different story, isn't it?
